Psycho-Surgery in Art


Here's a reproduction of an amazing Hieronymous Bosch painting, depicting (or satirizing?) the removal of a "stone of madness" from the head of a patient. Click on the image to see it enlarged; and, see the article about this, here. I love the funnel headgear that the surgeon is wearing, and the spectator (assistant?) with the book on her head. Reminds me, just a bit, of the goings-on within contemporary psychiatric hospitals...
