I noticed just a couple of mornings ago that when I let the dogs outside early in the morning, when it's still dark outside, the songbirds are already out there singing! What a delight. And, this year looks as if it might be a really good one for the yellow finches; I just now saw 4 of them all at once, eating at the finch feeder. They are not yet quite as yellow as the one in the photo above (I think they look a lot like plain old sparrows during the winter), but they are definitely working on it. Some red ones have also been around (I think they are called either Purple Finches or House Finches, but they have a beautiful red breast, and I just call 'em red finches). Lots of cardinals, too. An occasional bluejay, of course, and the regular gangs of sparrows, doves, starlings, and even some pigeons. There are mockingbirds in the neighborhood, but I haven't been able to attract any of them into the yard, yet.
