Nature, Red in Tooth and Claw

I walked around the corner of my house this morning to clean out the finch feeders. Glanced over toward the street, and did a double-take (one of those perceptual what-the-hell-is-that? responses that the brain does, when something unexpected appears...) it was a hawk! standing in my yard, just a few feet away from me, eating the squirrel he had just killed, and looking around at his surroundings. Evidently he didn't much like the locale. There were cars whizzing by, and the homeowner (me) was gawking at him. He soon flew off (carrying his squirrel), looking for a more peaceful and private setting in which to dine.
