New Book Out; and Perfidy of McDonald's

First, the good news: a new James Lee Burke novel is out! Check the del.icio.us links for the NYT review. That guy is one of my favorite writers. His characters are very much imperfect, very much fully human, and the stories are great. He has written a couple of series, one of them sit in and near New Orleans; they are my favorite of his books. The new one is part of that series, and I can't wait to read it!

The not-good news is about McDonalds once again contributing to childhood (not to mention adult) obesity by marketing a huge serving of soda called a "Hugo." I think it contains something like 400 calories. The story about all that is also linked over to the left. I found the story interesting because it provides the history of vastly increasing portion sizes from the beginning of McDonald's history, to today. And I do remember going to McDonald's when I was a kid, before there was a quarter pounder or a Big Mac... there were just hamburgers. Everybody just had a hamburger, and some french fries (the portion size was very small then), and that was that. If you got a Coke, I think you got about 6 or 8 ounces... not 40 ounces!
